Key Insight
The OBD voice script is the single most controllable variable in campaign performance. The same database with different scripts can produce a 2–5× difference in press-1 response rates. Here are the proven best practices for Indian OBD voice scripts — with examples and what to avoid.
Why the Script Is the Most Controllable Variable
In an OBD campaign, some variables are hard to improve quickly: database quality takes time to build, carrier connection rates are largely fixed, and calling window optimization has natural limits. But the voice script can be changed and A/B tested within days.
The difference between a well-crafted and a poorly crafted OBD script can be dramatic. We have seen the same database produce 2.3% press-1 rate with one script and 9.7% with a rewritten version — a 4× difference in lead volume from identical spend.
Getting the script right is the highest-leverage action before launching an OBD campaign.
The Anatomy of a High-Performing OBD Script
A great OBD script has four components in a specific order:
1. Instant identity (first 3 seconds) The listener decides in the first 3 seconds whether to hang up. If they don't recognize who is calling or why, they hang up. Start with your organization's name, clearly spoken.✅ "Namaste, yeh call hai [Institute Name] ki taraf se."
❌ "Hello, we have an exciting offer for you today."
✅ "Aapke bete/beti ke Class 12 ke baad JEE preparation ke baare mein hum aapse baat karna chahte hain."
❌ "We have excellent coaching programs for engineering entrance exams."
✅ "Hamare previous batch mein [X] students ne IIT qualify kiya — aur sabka CPL ₹80 se kam tha."
❌ "We offer world-class faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure, 24/7 doubt clearing, online and offline options, scholarship programs, and much more."
✅ "Free counselling book karne ke liye abhi press karein 1. Calls band karne ke liye press karein 9."
❌ "For information press 1, for brochure press 2, for fee details press 3, to speak with counsellor press 4, to be removed from our list press 9."
Length: The 30-Second Rule
OBD messages over 45 seconds have significantly lower completion rates — listeners hang up before hearing the CTA. Target 25–35 seconds for maximum completion rate.
Word count by target duration:
- 20 seconds: ~60–70 words
- 30 seconds: ~80–95 words
- 40 seconds: ~110–130 words
Read your script aloud at a natural, slightly-slower-than-conversation pace. Time it. Cut mercilessly until it fits within 35 seconds.
Recording Quality: The Often-Neglected Variable
Even a perfect script underperforms if the recording quality is poor. Common recording quality issues in Indian OBD campaigns:
Background noise: Office background, AC hum, traffic sounds. Record in a quiet room or professional studio. Audio clipping: Volume too high during recording creates distorted peaks. Record at 70–80% of maximum level. Robotic or rushed delivery: AI text-to-speech and nervous first-time voice-over artists both sound unnatural. A calm, professional human voice (not necessarily a celebrity) consistently outperforms TTS by 20–40% in press-1 rates.Free Strategy Call

Hindi Script Examples: What Works
Coaching admission — High performing "Namaste! Bhugtaan karne ke liye ya sahayata ke liye press karein 1." Insurance renewal — High performing "[Insurer Name] ki taraf se: aapki [Policy Type] policy [Date] ko expire ho rahi hai. Renewal ke liye abhi press karein 1 aur 5 minute mein online renew karein. Policy lapse hone se pehle apni coverage protect karein."What Not to Do: Common Script Mistakes
Mistake 1 — Starting with "Hello, this is an automated call" This immediately signals a robocall. Listeners hang up. Start with your brand name instead. Mistake 2 — Including too many options Every additional IVR option reduces the press-1 rate for your primary CTA. Three options max. Ideally one CTA plus one opt-out. Mistake 3 — Mentioning the word "free" for services that aren't free "Free counselling" that leads to a paid enrollment pitch destroys trust. If the counselling is free, it must actually be free. Mistake 4 — Threatening language in collection scripts "Legal action will be taken if you do not pay" violates the RBI Fair Practices Code and generates TRAI complaints. State consequences accurately and in neutral language. Mistake 5 — Not testing with your actual audience A script written by a Delhi-based marketing team for a Tamil Nadu audience often has the wrong cultural register, wrong language priority, or wrong value proposition emphasis. Always review scripts with someone from the target demographic before campaign launch.A/B Testing OBD Scripts
OBD scripts can be A/B tested within a campaign by splitting your database into segments and running different voice recordings on each segment.
Variables worth testing:
- Opening (brand name first vs direct value statement first)
- Male vs female voice
- Hindi vs regional language vs bilingual
- Short (22 seconds) vs medium (32 seconds) script
- Scarcity framing ("limited seats") vs discount framing ("scholarship available")
- Single CTA vs two CTAs
Run each variant on a minimum 10,000-number segment for statistically meaningful results. The winning variant scales to the full database.
How do we record a professional OBD voice script in Tamil or Telugu?
Contact a local recording studio in Chennai or Hyderabad — professional voice-over talent in regional languages is available at ₹2,000–₹5,000 per recording (30–60 seconds) in every major Indian city. Alternatively, Scalify Labs provides a network of regional language voice talent for OBD script recording as part of campaign setup.
Should OBD scripts be in formal or conversational language?
Match the language register to your audience. Financial services (bank EMI reminders, insurance) work better with formal language — it establishes authority and seriousness. Education and consumer campaigns work better with conversational language — it sounds friendly and reduces the "corporate robocall" feel that triggers hang-ups.
How often should we change OBD scripts during a campaign?
Run a script for at least 50,000 calls before evaluating performance. Changing scripts too frequently prevents meaningful comparison. Once you have data, test one variable at a time — changing both the voice and the script simultaneously makes it impossible to know which change drove the improvement.
