With 14,500+ NBFCs operating in India, loan collection communication is one of the highest-volume, highest-stakes messaging use cases. RCS offers verified sender identity, interactive dispute buttons, and 80%+ read rates — but compliance requirements for collection messaging are specific. Here is the playbook.

Why NBFCs Are Moving to RCS for Collections

India has over 14,500 registered NBFCs as of 2025. Between personal loans, business loans, gold loans, vehicle finance, and microfinance, the sector sends hundreds of millions of collection-related messages monthly — EMI reminders, overdue notices, payment confirmations, and dispute resolutions.

Plain SMS has been the default channel. It costs ₹0.12–₹0.16/message, has no branding, and generates low response rates. Many borrowers ignore unbranded SMS messages or mistake them for spam, particularly at early delinquency stages when a single SMS nudge could prevent an account from rolling.

RCS changes the economics and effectiveness of collection messaging in specific, measurable ways:

80%+ message read rate vs. 20–30% for SMS Verified business branding eliminates "is this a real message from my lender?" doubt Interactive buttons allow borrowers to respond without calling ("I already paid," "Request callback," "Pay now") Rich cards can display loan account details, outstanding amount, and payment link in a single message ₹0.18/message — higher than SMS, but the response rate differential makes the economics work at scale

The Compliance Framework for NBFC Collection Messages

Before deploying RCS for collections, NBFC compliance teams need to clear four regulatory considerations.

1. RBI Fair Practices Code for NBFCs (Loan Recovery)

The RBI's Fair Practices Code for NBFCs, updated through various circulars, governs the manner of loan recovery communications. Key constraints for any messaging channel:

  • Collection messages must identify the NBFC by registered name
  • Messages must not use threatening or coercive language
  • Contact must be during permissible hours (typically 8 AM to 7 PM)
  • Borrowers must have a clear recourse mechanism (dispute escalation path)
RCS satisfies these requirements when properly configured: your verified sender profile displays your NBFC's registered name. Interactive "Dispute" or "I already paid" buttons provide the recourse mechanism within the message itself.

2. DPDP Act 2023 — Data Minimization in Collection Messages

Collection messages sent via RCS should follow data minimization principles: include only the loan account number (partial/masked), EMI amount due, due date, and payment link. Full account details, PAN numbers, or aadhaar references must not appear in message bodies.

3. Opt-Out Mechanism for Promotional Content

EMI reminders and overdue notices are transactional in nature — they do not require prior marketing consent. However, any promotional content (refinancing offers, top-up loan advertisements) included in collection messages requires opt-in and must have a functional opt-out button in the RCS message.

Keep collection messages strictly transactional. Reserve promotional content for a separate, opted-in communication stream.

The RBI no-link rule applies specifically to OTP messages. Collection messages — EMI reminders, payment confirmations, overdue notices — can and should include payment action buttons. A "Pay Now" button that opens a payment gateway link is fully compliant for collection communication and dramatically increases immediate payment rates.

The NBFC RCS Collection Workflow: 4 Stages

Stage 1 — Pre-Due Date Reminder (D-7 and D-3)

Message type: Rich card with loan summary and payment button
Content: Account number (masked), EMI amount, due date, "Pay Now" → UPI/payment link
Buttons: "Pay Now" | "View Statement" | "I have a query"
Expected response: 12–18% direct click-to-pay rate in the first 24 hours

This is where RCS shows the clearest advantage over SMS. A rich card with the borrower's name, the exact EMI amount, and a single-tap payment button converts significantly better than an SMS with a long URL.

Stage 2 — Due Date (D-0)

Message type: Transactional alert with urgency
Content: EMI due today, amount, payment deadline
Buttons: "Pay Now" | "I paid already" | "Request 2-day extension"

The "I paid already" button serves dual purpose: it gives the borrower an immediate recourse action (RBI Fair Practices compliance) and it signals your system to pause collection attempts for that account pending payment verification.

Stage 3 — Early Delinquency (D+1 to D+30, Bucket 0)

Message type: Personal, verified communication — not bulk blast
Content: Account status, outstanding amount, payment options
Buttons: "Pay Now" | "Request Callback" | "Dispute This Amount"

This bucket is critical. A borrower who has missed their first EMI is often a good customer who hit a temporary cash flow issue. A verified, professional-looking RCS message from your NBFC brand — showing your logo, name, and a straightforward "Request Callback" button — converts significantly better than an unbranded SMS that reads like spam.

Stage 4 — Late Delinquency (D+31+)

At this stage, follow your existing collection protocols. RCS communication continues as a customer communication channel (payment plans, settlement options), but hard collection processes are typically handled by field teams and calling at this stage. Keep RCS messaging in this bucket informational and non-coercive.

SMS Fallback Strategy for NBFCs

Your NBFC's borrower portfolio will include customers on iOS devices, feature phones, and Samsung Galaxy phones that have not switched to Google Messages. For these customers, RCS delivers as SMS fallback automatically.

The hybrid approach that works best:

  • RCS primary delivery to RCS-capable Android devices (60–65% of portfolio in urban India, lower in rural)
  • SMS fallback for all other devices — same message content, no interactive buttons
  • WhatsApp secondary for accounts where you have WhatsApp opt-in — high-value personal loan customers, for example
You pay ₹0.18/msg for RCS deliveries, standard SMS rate for fallback. Net cost per collection message across a mixed portfolio is approximately ₹0.14–₹0.16/message — comparable to all-SMS, with meaningfully better conversion on the RCS-delivered portion.

Can NBFC collection messages via RCS contain a payment link?

Yes. The RBI no-link rule applies specifically to OTP (one-time password) messages. Collection messages — EMI reminders, payment alerts, overdue notices — can and should include payment action buttons that link to your payment gateway.

Do RCS collection messages need TRAI DLT registration?

RCS business messaging in India operates through Google's Jibe Cloud network, not TRAI's DLT framework. RCS senders are verified by Google rather than pre-registered on DLT. However, your content must still comply with RBI Fair Practices Code for NBFC recovery communications.

What is the minimum order for RCS messaging for NBFCs?

The minimum order through Scalify Labs is 50,000 messages (₹9,000 total). For NBFCs with monthly collection message volumes above 2 lakh, volume pricing is available at ₹0.16/message.
