Why RCS Stopped Working on Samsung Messages: The Real Cause
Two separate things happened, and their combination broke RCS for Samsung + Jio users specifically.
What Samsung Did
In late 2023, Samsung shipped One UI 6.0 — a major software update rolled out across Galaxy S23, S24, A54, A34, M-series, and other Galaxy devices.
With One UI 6.0, Samsung made a deliberate product decision: they removed native RCS support from Samsung Messages.
The "Chat features" toggle — previously accessible in Samsung Messages under Settings — disappeared entirely. Samsung did not issue a clear public explanation. But the result was that Samsung Messages went back to being a plain SMS app.
This was not a bug. It was not caused by your carrier. Samsung chose to remove RCS from their own messaging app.
What Jio's RCS Architecture Means
Separately, Jio's RCS network runs on Google's Jibe Cloud infrastructure. This is the same platform that powers Google Messages' RCS functionality. It is compatible with Google Messages, but it was never natively compatible with Samsung's proprietary RCS stack.
Before One UI 6.0, Samsung Messages had its own RCS implementation that partially worked with Jio's network on some devices. After One UI 6.0 removed Samsung's RCS implementation, the only RCS path available on any Samsung device with a Jio SIM became: Google Messages.
