Key Insight

Email drip campaigns convert at 2–4%. WhatsApp drip campaigns — the same logic applied to WhatsApp with automated sequences — convert at 8–15% in India. This guide covers how to plan, build, and launch a WhatsApp drip sequence from first touch to sale, with industry-specific examples.

What Is a WhatsApp Drip Campaign?

A WhatsApp drip campaign is an automated sequence of pre-approved WhatsApp messages sent to a contact over a defined period — triggered by a specific event (form submission, purchase, sign-up) and spaced based on time delays or contact behaviour.

Unlike a broadcast (one message to many), a drip is personalised to the contact's journey stage and sent based on what they did or didn't do.

What does the customer need to know/feel/do at each stage?

Example (real estate enquiry):

  • Day 0: Needs basic information and brochure

  • Day 1: Wants to know about pricing and payment plans

  • Day 3: Ready to be invited to site visit

  • Day 7: Needs social proof (testimonials)

  • Day 14: Urgency (limited inventory)

  • Day 21: Decision push (contact counsellor)

Step 3: Write message templates for each touch
Each message must be submitted to Meta as a template before sending. Templates can include:
  • Text with personalisation variables ({{name}}, {{product}})

  • Header image or video

  • CTA button (visit website, call now, WhatsApp reply)

  • Quick Reply buttons (Yes / No / Tell me more)

Step 4: Set up branching logic
Good drip systems branch based on behaviour:
  • Contact replied → move to "engaged" track (faster sequence)

  • Contact clicked CTA → trigger sales team alert

  • Contact opted out → remove from all sequences immediately

  • Contact didn't open any messages → move to re-engagement track

Step 5: Set timing rules
  • Don't send between 9 PM and 8 AM

  • Weekend messaging requires testing — for B2C it works, for B2B it can annoy

  • Minimum 4-hour gap between messages in the same sequence

  • Maximum recommended sequence length: 14 days for most industries

Opt-Out Handling (Required for Compliance)

All WhatsApp drip campaigns must include a way for contacts to opt out. Meta requires marketing templates to include opt-out language. Standard practice:

Add to the footer of every marketing message:
"Reply STOP to unsubscribe from WhatsApp updates."

When a contact replies STOP:

  • Remove them from all active sequences immediately

  • Flag in CRM as opted-out

  • Do not send any further marketing messages (utility messages like payment confirmations can still be sent)

Failure to honour opt-outs results in account restriction by Meta.

Sample 7-Day Drip: NBFC Personal Loan Enquiry

Day 0, 2 min after form submission:
"Hi {{name}}, thanks for enquiring about a personal loan. Based on your requirement of ₹{{amount}}, I'm sharing the quick eligibility check: {{link}}. Takes 2 minutes."

Day 0, 2 hours (if no click):
"Did you get a chance to check your eligibility? Your offer might be better than you expect. Check here: {{link}}"

Day 1:
"Your loan of ₹{{amount}} could be approved in 24 hours. Documents needed: Aadhar, PAN, 3 months' salary slips. Start here: {{link}}"

Day 3:
"{{name}}, we have a limited-period offer: 0 processing fee on loans applied before {{date}}. Check your eligibility: {{link}}"

Day 5:
"Our loan advisor {{advisor_name}} has reviewed your profile and has an offer for you. Should I connect you? Reply YES or call {{phone}}."

Day 7:
"Final follow-up: your loan enquiry expires in 48 hours. Apply now to lock in today's interest rate: {{link}}. Reply STOP to unsubscribe."

What tools do I need to run a WhatsApp drip campaign in India?

You need: (1) WhatsApp Business API access through a BSP, (2) A BSP platform that supports drip automation (Interakt, Wati, and AiSensy all do), and (3) A CRM or form tool that passes lead data to the BSP to trigger the sequence. Scalify Labs sets up the complete drip infrastructure — BSP, templates, CRM integration, and sequence logic.

How is a WhatsApp drip campaign different from a bulk WhatsApp blast?

A blast sends the same message to everyone at once. A drip sends personalised messages based on where each contact is in their journey and what they've done so far. Drips are 3–5× more effective because they're timely and relevant. Blasts work for announcements; drips work for conversion.
